A Legacy of Heritage

The story of Swiss Pantry is deeply rooted in the Miller family’s heritage. Descendants of Jacob Hostetler, who immigrated to America in 1738, the Millers share a rich history that spans continents and centuries. The Hostetler family, originally from the Schwarzenburg area of Switzerland, later moved to Alsace, France, in search of religious freedom. Their commitment to the principles of adult believer’s baptism and non-violence, as taught by Christ, eventually led them to the Mennonite community in Virginia.

In 1987, the Millers relocated from Virginia to Tennessee as part of a church plant, drawn to the beautiful farmland of Belvidere. They soon discovered that the area was steeped in Swiss heritage, mirroring their own values of hard work and community. There was even a linguistic connection, as the older residents’ Swiss German dialect bore similarities to the Millers' Pennsylvania Dutch. Surrounded by familiar Mennonite names like Leichty, Zimmerman, and Zaugg, the Millers felt right at home.

When the time came to open their bakery, they chose a name that honored both their heritage and the local community: Swiss Pantry. Today, the bakery serves as a testament to the Miller family's journey and the shared cultural values of the people of Belvidere.
